below is a chart to help self-assess: it is an imperfect guide & many experiences are not accounted for within it. you know your financial situation better than anyone else, & certainly better than this chart; locate yourself as best you can, while being both honest/ accountable & self-loving/ compassionate

lower price range:

  • i frequently stress about meeting basic needs

  • i rent on the lower-end &/or have unstable housing

  • i’m unemployed or underemployed

  • i struggle to access healthcare

  • i have no access to financial savings

  • i have significant debt which sometimes prevents me from meeting my basic needs

  • i have no or very limited expendable income for eating out, coffee to go, movies, music, books, & new technology

  • i can’t afford a vacation &/or don’t have the ability to take time off without significant financial burden

  • i do not have family wealth or support

  • i support kids or other dependents 

  • i am qualified to receive public assistance (food stamps, medicaid, etc.)

  • i have experienced incarceration

  • i do work for survival that is often criminalized

  • i have less access to money because of abuse

  • i have a chronic illness or disability that impacts my ability to earn income

  • i have immigration-related expenses

  • i am an elder with limited financial support

middle price range:

  • i stress about basic needs (food, housing, transportation) at times, but am still able to meet them

  • i have access to adequate, relatively stable housing

  • i’m employed

  • i have access to healthcare

  • i might have access to financial savings

  • i have some expendable income for eating out, coffee to go, movies, music, books, & new technology

  • i can take a vacation every year without significant financial burden

  • i have some family wealth or have benefited from family support at times (family helps pay for part of my rent/ phone/ healthcare/ etc.)

  • i have access to money & resources in times of need

  • i have earning power (even if i’m not using it right now) from college degree(s), able-bodiedness, race, gender, social networks, family connections...

  • i fall somewhere in the middle in the social matrix, in terms of how aspects of my identity impact the kind of institutional support or social privilege i do/ don’t have access to

higher price range (standard fee or ↑):

  • i can comfortably meet basic needs

  • i own a home, rent a higher-end place, or rent by choice

  • i’m employed or don’t need to work to meet my needs

  • i work part-time by choice

  • i have regular access to healthcare

  • i have regular access to financial savings

  • i might have some debt, but it doesn’t prevent me from meeting my needs

  • i have ample expendable income for eating out, coffee to go, movies, music, books, & new technology

  • i can take time off for vacation

  • i travel recreationally

  • i have family wealth or have benefited from family support throughout my life

  • i have few or no dependents

  • i pay other practitioners full price

  • i have savings, investments, inherited money &/or retirement accounts

  • i own commercial &/or rental properties

  • i benefit from institutional support & social privilege because of aspects of my identity

resources are not distributed equally nor equitably. this isn’t really okay, but it’s reality, & it’s what this scale is attempting to account for: the spectrum of experience related to resource & access.
